Axel's take: 8.4/10

A comfortable downtown base with distinctive style, but service can lack polish. a design-led, upscale 4-star hotel in downtown Portland, scored for what it is.

The Duniway is a design-led, upscale 4-star in downtown Portland, and a strong pick for a city break built around restaurants, shopping and shows. Booking.com and Expedia guests repeatedly praise the spacious rooms, comfortable beds and cleanliness. The location near Pioneer Courthouse Square makes exploring without a car practical, while the indoor pool, gym and Mayrose restaurant give it more substance than looks alone.

The main caveat is consistency rather than comfort. Staff earn plenty of praise, but recent Tripadvisor and Expedia reviews also describe less welcoming interactions and uneven problem handling. Some Tripadvisor guests flag weak shower pressure. Parking costs extra, too. We'd choose it for a comfortable, characterful downtown stay, but skip it if polished luxury service is the priority.

• Best for: couples on a downtown city break; theater and concert visitors; travelers exploring without a car

• Watch out for: inconsistent front-desk service; some reports of weak shower pressure; paid parking

• Location: Central downtown setting near Pioneer Courthouse Square, light rail and performance venues.

• Rooms: Spacious, distinctive rooms with frequently praised beds; some guests report weak showers.

• Cleanliness: Strong overall cleanliness ratings, with occasional lapses rather than a dominant complaint pattern.

• Service: Usually friendly and helpful, though recent reviews show uneven reception and problem handling.

• Amenities: Indoor pool, fitness center, terrace, and Mayrose restaurant and bar.

• Fees and surprises: Self-parking and valet cost extra; pets incur a fee, and early check-in may carry a charge.
