#4 of 5 hotels in Shell Beach by Axel's take. Shell Beach is #2 of 6 places to stay in Pismo Beach. The best hotels in Shell Beach, ranked · Where to stay in Pismo Beach

Axel's take: 8.2/10

Pick it for ocean-view downtime, not polished rooms or a sandy beachfront. A 3-star, motel-style inn on the Shell Beach bluffs, scored for what it is.

Spyglass Inn is a 3-star, motel-style inn on the Shell Beach bluffs, and it's a strong pick for a relaxed coastal break—especially with a confirmed ocean-view room. Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise the welcoming staff, comfortable beds and seaside grounds. The bluff-top path and fire pits are the main attraction, backed by an outdoor pool and hot tub. Recent guests also recommend the adjoining Westerly restaurant.

You're paying for the setting more than consistently fresh interiors: reviews across sites mention worn carpets, dated furnishings and uneven room upkeep, although cleanliness feedback is mostly positive. September and October 2026 guests report property construction, including renovation of the front building; check the current scope before booking. Parking costs extra, there's no elevator, and this is a cliff-top location rather than a sandy beachfront. We'd skip it for a polished resort stay or a beach holiday without driving.

  • Best for: Couples booking ocean-view rooms; Coastal road-trippers; Travelers who prioritize scenery over fresh interiors

  • Watch out for: Front-building renovation reported in fall 2026; Room condition and views vary; Paid parking and no elevator

  • Location: Scenic Shell Beach bluffs with a coastal walking path; downtown Pismo and its sandy beach are a drive away.

  • Rooms: Comfortable but unevenly maintained; confirm ocean views, balconies or fireplaces, and note that the hotel now confirms air conditioning.

  • Cleanliness: Mostly positive across major sites, with some recurring complaints about worn carpets and occasional odors.

  • Service: Friendly, helpful staff are a consistent strength across guest-review sites.

  • Amenities: Outdoor pool, hot tub, oceanfront fire pits and free Wi-Fi; recent guests confirm dining at adjoining Westerly.

  • Fees and surprises: Parking and designated dog-friendly rooms carry fees; fall 2026 guests report front-building renovation, with completion unverified.
