Grand Hotel Oslo is a historic 5-star on Karl Johans gate, and we’d choose it for sightseeing and old-school character rather than flawless luxury. Recent Expedia and kimkim guests repeatedly praise the central location, welcoming staff and cleanliness; breakfast is another consistent highlight. The public spaces and rooftop bar give it more personality than a standard business hotel.

The bedrooms are less consistently impressive: guests across several sites describe some as small or dated, and street noise can undermine the central-location advantage. Service is generally well liked, but problem handling does not always meet five-star expectations. Crucially, the spa, pool and sauna are currently closed for renovation; Grand Spa is scheduled to reopen December 1, 2026. We’d skip it for a wellness break before then, or if contemporary rooms and reliably polished luxury matter most.
