Axel's take: 7.4/10

Come for the skyline views, but don't count on quiet nights. A mid-range boutique hotel in Long Island City with Manhattan skyline views, scored for what it is.

Z Hotel is a mid-range Long Island City boutique hotel whose Manhattan views are its strongest selling point. Expedia now lists it as The Gantry Hotel, formerly Z Hotel NYC. We'd consider it for a skyline-focused city break: recent Expedia and Trip.com guests regularly praise the views, friendly staff and clean rooms. The rooftop adds nightlife appeal, though this isn't a full-service luxury hotel.

The biggest compromise is sleep. Multiple 2026 guests describe loud rooftop parties, while shared-area cleanliness gets less consistent feedback than the bedrooms. Summer guests also reported renovation work and early construction noise; confirm whether that work is finished during the rebrand. The surrounding industrial streets can feel deserted after dark, and reaching the subway requires a walk. Add a nightly destination fee, no hotel breakfast and no gym, and we'd steer light sleepers and amenity-focused travelers elsewhere.

• Best for: Couples prioritizing skyline views; Nightlife-minded travelers; Visitors comfortable staying outside Manhattan

• Watch out for: Late-night rooftop music; Renovation status during the Gantry rebrand; Destination fee and limited hotel facilities

• Location: Industrial Long Island City setting; subway access requires a walk through streets some guests find deserted at night.

• Rooms: Floor-to-ceiling skyline views are the highlight; room size and maintenance receive mixed feedback.

• Cleanliness: Many guests praise clean bedrooms, but elevators and other shared areas attract recurring complaints.

• Service: Friendly, helpful staff are a consistent strength across recent booking-site reviews.

• Amenities: Rooftop dining and nightlife, Wi-Fi and mini-fridges; the official FAQ says no breakfast service or gym.

• Fees and surprises: Nightly destination fee, pet charges and no on-site parking; Expedia now uses the Gantry name, so confirm renovation status.
