Axel's take: 8.1/10

A strong Midtown base for space and friendly staff, less convincing for polish. a traditional 4-star hotel with roomy suites in Murray Hill, scored for what it is.

The Shelburne Sonesta is a traditional 4-star in Murray Hill that makes more sense for room to spread out than sleek interiors. We'd pick it for a practical Manhattan stay: Grand Central is a short walk away, and standard rooms are generous by local standards. Recent Expedia and Tripadvisor guests repeatedly praise helpful staff, comfortable beds and generally clean rooms. The Vintage Green rooftop adds skyline views, while apartment-style options suit families and longer visits.

The trade-off is uneven upkeep. Worn furniture comes up across review sites, alongside recurring complaints about slow elevators and inconsistent air-conditioning. A mandatory nightly facilities fee also needs budgeting for. Confirm the exact suite layout and kitchenette equipment rather than relying on photos. We'd skip it if freshly updated rooms and reliably smooth building services matter more than space and location.

• Best for: families needing extra space; sightseers using Grand Central; longer stays in apartment-style rooms

• Watch out for: worn furnishings and variable air-conditioning; slow, crowded elevators; mandatory nightly facilities fee

• Location: Walkable Murray Hill base near Grand Central; street-facing rooms can still pick up traffic noise.

• Rooms: Generous floor space, but aging furnishings; separate bedrooms and kitchenette equipment depend on category.

• Cleanliness: Broadly positive recent feedback, with occasional housekeeping lapses rather than a dominant cleanliness problem.

• Service: Warm doormen and helpful staff are recurring strengths; problem handling is less consistent.

• Amenities: Vintage Green rooftop, Take Care restaurant, fitness center and selected rooms with kitchenettes.

• Fees and surprises: Mandatory nightly facilities fee; breakfast and valet parking cost extra unless included in your package.
