Axel's take: 8.6/10

Generous rooms and warm service make this a strong Broadway base, despite dated touches. An old-school Italian-style 4-star in Midtown’s Theater District, scored for what it is.

The Michelangelo is an old-school Italian-style 4-star, part of Starhotels Collezione, with a particularly useful Theater District address. It’s a strong pick if you want room to spread out rather than the latest design. Recent Expedia and Tripadvisor guests repeatedly praise spacious bedrooms, comfortable beds, thorough housekeeping and personable staff. Broadway, Rockefeller Center and several subway lines are close enough to make sightseeing straightforward.

The trade-off is polish: traditional furnishings charm many guests but look dated to others, and some report street noise or maintenance niggles. The mandatory nightly Residence Fee also weakens the value, especially if you barely use its benefits. Guests repeatedly flag the lack of in-room tea and coffee facilities. We’d choose it for space and hospitality, but skip it if contemporary finishes and an extras-light bill matter most.

• Best for: Broadway and Radio City visitors; Travelers who prioritize spacious rooms; Fans of traditional hotel service

• Watch out for: Mandatory nightly Residence Fee; Traditional rooms can feel dated; No in-room tea and coffee facilities reported

• Location: Excellent Theater District base near Rockefeller Center, Times Square and multiple subway lines.

• Rooms: Unusually spacious for Midtown, with comfortable beds; some guests mention dated finishes and street noise.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across recent guest feedback, including praise for attentive housekeeping.

• Service: Friendly, helpful staff are a recurring highlight, especially the door and bell teams.

• Amenities: Lounge dining, room service and a 24-hour gym; advertised swim-club access is off-site and costs extra.

• Fees and surprises: Mandatory Residence Fee, an incidental card hold and paid parking; breakfast is generally extra.
