Axel's take: 8.7/10

A strong Times Square luxury pick, especially for Broadway and surprisingly quiet rooms. a historic five-star hotel with contemporary rooms on Times Square, scored for what it is.

The Knickerbocker is a historic five-star hotel with contemporary interiors, and we'd put it high on the list for a theater-focused New York trip. Booking.com and Expedia guests consistently praise clean, comfortable rooms, while recent Tripadvisor reviews reinforce the warm service and unusually generous space for this location. Many guests find the rooms surprisingly quiet despite Times Square outside. St. Cloud rooftop bar adds a genuine reason to spend an evening at the hotel.

The trade-off is luxury in a busy sightseeing hub, not a quiet neighborhood retreat. Expedia lists a mandatory nightly resort fee, and breakfast and parking cost extra. The hotel confirms there is no pool or spa. We'd choose it for Broadway access and comfortable sightseeing; we'd skip it if a residential setting or extensive wellness facilities matter more.

• Best for: Broadway and theater trips; first-time New York visitors; travelers wanting larger Midtown rooms

• Watch out for: mandatory nightly resort fee; busy Times Square surroundings; no pool or spa

• Location: At Broadway and 42nd Street, with excellent theater access and major subway lines nearby.

• Rooms: Contemporary, generally spacious and comfortable; many recent guests praise the sound insulation.

• Cleanliness: A clear strength across Booking.com, Expedia and recent Tripadvisor feedback.

• Service: Warm, helpful staff earn repeated praise, with occasional reports of uneven follow-through.

• Amenities: St. Cloud rooftop, Charlie Palmer Steak IV, café and fitness studios; no pool or spa.

• Fees and surprises: Mandatory nightly resort fee, incidental deposit, and additional charges for breakfast and parking.
