Axel's take: 8.4/10

A strong downtown base with welcoming staff, but little room to spread out. a compact 4-star boutique hotel in Manhattan’s Financial District, scored for what it is.

The FIDI is a compact 4-star boutique hotel that gets the important things right: clean rooms, comfortable beds and a convenient downtown location. We'd pick it for a solo trip or a couple who plan to spend most days exploring. Recent Expedia, Booking.com and Tripadvisor guests repeatedly praise the helpful staff and cleanliness. Wall Street, Battery Park and several subway lines are close, and the continental breakfast is a useful extra.

The main compromise is space, not upkeep. The hotel lists standard rooms at just 151 square feet, and guests flag limited storage and bathroom counter space. Breakfast is light rather than a cooked spread, and a mandatory destination fee deserves attention before booking. We'd skip it for a family needing room to unpack, or anyone expecting spacious, full-service luxury from the four-star label.

• Best for: solo travelers exploring downtown; couples traveling light; Financial District business trips

• Watch out for: small standard rooms and limited storage; mandatory destination fee; continental breakfast without cooked options

• Location: Close to Wall Street, Battery Park and multiple subway lines; convenient for downtown sightseeing.

• Rooms: Modern and comfortable but compact; Executive King rooms offer more breathing room.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across recent reviews on several booking and review sites.

• Service: Helpful, welcoming front-desk staff draw repeated praise.

• Amenities: Continental breakfast, a fitness center and on-site Sushi by Bou; wine-and-cheese receptions on select days.

• Fees and surprises: Expedia lists a mandatory destination fee and nightly incidental deposit; no on-site parking.
