Axel's take: 8.6/10

A comfortable Midtown base with refreshed rooms, strong service and an irritating nightly fee. a renovated, upscale 4-star hotel in Midtown Manhattan, scored for what it is.

Sofitel New York is an upscale 4-star that makes a strong case for staying in Midtown: generous rooms by Manhattan standards, comfortable beds and a location handy for Bryant Park, Broadway and Fifth Avenue. The hotel says its comprehensive renovation finished in late 2025, refreshing every room and the public spaces. Recent Expedia, Tripadvisor and Agoda guests repeatedly praise cleanliness, surprisingly quiet rooms and helpful staff. We'd pick it for a comfortable sightseeing or business base rather than a destination hotel.

The main catch is the mandatory nightly Urban Experience Fee, especially if you won't use its dining credit, which excludes breakfast. Service earns plenty of praise, but some recent Tripadvisor guests describe uneven follow-through and poorly explained benefits. We'd skip it if you dislike bundled extras or expect consistently flawless luxury service.

• Best for: first-time Manhattan visitors; Broadway weekends; Midtown business travelers

• Watch out for: mandatory nightly Urban Experience Fee; dining credit excludes breakfast; occasional service inconsistencies

• Location: Walkable Midtown base near Bryant Park, Broadway, Fifth Avenue and several subway lines.

• Rooms: Fully renovated according to the hotel; guests consistently praise space, bedding and quiet.

• Cleanliness: A clear strength across recent guest feedback, including Expedia's strong cleanliness rating.

• Service: Usually warm and helpful, though recent Tripadvisor reviews flag occasional lapses in follow-through.

• Amenities: Social 45 Bar & Bistro, room service and a refreshed 24-hour fitness studio.

• Fees and surprises: Mandatory nightly fee includes a dining credit excluding breakfast; valet parking costs extra and has no in-and-out privileges.
