Axel's take: 7.3/10

Choose it for Midtown convenience and roomy bedrooms, not a full-service boutique experience. a design-led 4-star Midtown boutique hotel with limited services, scored for what it is.

Royalton is a design-led 4-star boutique hotel near Bryant Park, best treated as a comfortable Midtown base rather than a luxury destination. Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise the walkable location, generous room sizes, comfortable beds and helpful staff. We'd consider it for theater trips or sightseeing when location and bedroom space matter more than hotel facilities.

The compromise is a hotel whose upkeep doesn't consistently match its stylish image. Recent guests describe dated furnishings, worn upholstery and occasional maintenance problems, although many still report clean, comfortable rooms. The hotel confirms there is no operating restaurant or bar, no breakfast and no room service. A mandatory daily facility fee also applies. We'd skip it if you want freshly renovated surroundings, on-site dining or a lively lobby-bar scene.

• Best for: theatergoers and Midtown sightseers; travelers prioritizing bedroom space; independent travelers happy to eat out

• Watch out for: no restaurant, bar, breakfast or room service; dated furnishings and uneven maintenance; mandatory daily facility fee

• Location: Central Midtown position near Bryant Park, Broadway theaters, subway connections and Grand Central.

• Rooms: Space and bed comfort earn praise; dated furnishings and occasional elevator problems temper the experience.

• Cleanliness: Generally positive feedback, but some recent guests report stained upholstery and lapses.

• Service: Helpful front-desk staff and doormen are recurring strengths, with occasional inconsistent encounters.

• Amenities: The hotel lists a fitness center with Peloton bikes; restaurant, bar, breakfast and room service are unavailable.

• Fees and surprises: Mandatory facility fee covers Wi-Fi and gym access; nearby garage parking costs extra.
