Axel's take: 8.7/10

A strong Midtown base with comfortable rooms, but frustrating elevator waits. a stylish, upscale 4-star near Penn Station, scored for what it is.

This stylish 4-star in the Garment District is a strong pick if you want Penn Station, Madison Square Garden and multiple subway lines close by without sleeping directly in Times Square. Recent Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise clean rooms, comfortable beds, helpful staff and city views. Room size varies, but many find the space generous by Manhattan standards. VERSA’s terrace and complimentary Planet Fitness access add useful extras beyond the location.

The clearest recurring drawback is slow elevators: several Tripadvisor guests describe substantial waits, so leave a cushion before trains or shows. Service is generally well regarded, though check-in follow-through occasionally disappoints. Breakfast is normally extra, and lounge access is restricted to qualifying guests. We’d choose it for a comfortable, well-connected city break; skip it if you want a quiet neighborhood or reliably quick trips between room and street.

• Best for: Penn Station arrivals; Madison Square Garden events; sightseers using the subway

• Watch out for: recurring elevator waits; breakfast usually costs extra; busy Midtown surroundings

• Location: Excellent transit access near Penn Station, Macy’s and Madison Square Garden.

• Rooms: Modern rooms with comfortable beds; size and views depend on the category.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across guest ratings and recent reviews.

• Service: Usually friendly and helpful, with occasional check-in communication lapses.

• Amenities: VERSA terrace, Thread Bar, complimentary Planet Fitness access and a restricted-access club lounge.

• Fees and surprises: Breakfast and valet parking cost extra; valet has no in/out privileges.
