Axel's take: 7.5/10

A convenient Brooklyn base with character, but uneven upkeep and construction noise. an artsy mid-range boutique hotel in Downtown Brooklyn, scored for what it is.

NU Hotel is an artsy mid-range boutique hotel whose strongest asset is its Brooklyn location: restaurants, shops and several subway lines are within easy reach. We'd consider it for a neighborhood-focused city break rather than a hotel-centered stay. Expedia and Booking.com guests frequently praise clean, reasonably spacious rooms, and many highlight helpful staff. Murals in selected rooms and hammocks in Urban Suites add personality; breakfast, bikes and a gym cover the practical extras.

The drawbacks are consistency and wear. Recent reviews across several sites describe tired furnishings, variable bed comfort and occasional maintenance problems; breakfast earns mixed reactions. The nearby Brooklyn Borough-Based Jail construction project remains active, with completion expected in spring 2029. Request a rear-facing room, though quiet isn't guaranteed. We'd skip it if reliable silence, polished service or freshly updated interiors are priorities, and check the amenity-fee terms before booking.

• Best for: Brooklyn neighborhood explorers; Subway-based city breaks; Families wanting bunk-bed suites

• Watch out for: Nearby jail construction; Uneven room upkeep and bed comfort; Amenity-fee terms

• Location: Strong access to Smith Street restaurants, Downtown Brooklyn and several subway lines.

• Rooms: Good space for New York, with distinctive specialty rooms; furnishings and mattresses receive mixed feedback.

• Cleanliness: Generally praised, although some guests flag worn or dirty hallway carpets and isolated housekeeping lapses.

• Service: Many guests praise helpful staff, but reception warmth and problem resolution are inconsistent.

• Amenities: Continental breakfast, loaner bikes and a 24-hour gym; breakfast quality divides guests.

• Fees and surprises: Guests report an amenity fee; confirm inclusions. The adjacent garage is independently operated and charged separately.
