Axel's take: 8.3/10

A comfortable downtown base with good-sized rooms, but fees take the shine off. a full-service 4-star business hotel in the Financial District, scored for what it is.

New York Marriott Downtown is a full-service 4-star business hotel that makes a strong base for Lower Manhattan. Tripadvisor and Trip.com guests repeatedly praise clean rooms, comfortable beds and more space than many Manhattan hotels offer. Some rooms add impressive harbor or river views. We'd pick it for Financial District work trips or sightseeing around the 9/11 Memorial, Battery Park and the Oculus; nearby subway stations make exploring farther afield straightforward.

There are several practical compromises. Sound insulation draws recurring criticism, and service gets warmer marks overall than some individual check-in experiences suggest. A mandatory nightly destination fee adds friction, particularly if you won't use its benefits; parking costs extra too. We'd skip it if Broadway and Midtown are your daily focus, or if you want boutique character rather than dependable big-hotel comfort.

• Best for: Financial District business trips; Lower Manhattan sightseeing; Travelers wanting more room space

• Watch out for: Mandatory nightly destination fee; Sound carries between some rooms; Less convenient for Midtown-focused stays

• Location: Walkable to the 9/11 Memorial, Wall Street and Battery Park, with several subway stations nearby.

• Rooms: Generally good-sized for Manhattan, with comfortable beds; views depend on the room booked.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across recent Tripadvisor and Trip.com feedback.

• Service: Frequently friendly and helpful, though some guests report uneven reception and problem handling.

• Amenities: A 24-hour gym, Bill's Bar & Burger and a club lounge with access conditions.

• Fees and surprises: Mandatory daily destination fee and paid parking; confirm included benefits and Wi-Fi terms before arrival.
