Axel's take: 8.3/10

A strong Midtown base with character, helpful staff and some small-room compromises. A historic 4-star Midtown hotel beside Herald Square, scored for what it is.

The Martinique is a historic 4-star in Koreatown, and we'd choose it for convenience and character rather than luxury. Herald Square subway access and nearby Penn Station make getting around straightforward. Recent Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise helpful staff, clean rooms and comfortable beds. The diner, bars and gym make it a practical base for sightseeing or business.

Room categories matter: standard rooms and bathrooms can feel tight, while larger categories attract better feedback on space. Street noise is another trade-off. There's a mandatory destination fee with food-and-drink credit; check its terms rather than assuming breakfast is included. Renovation status needs checking too: earlier 2026 guests reported facade scaffolding and construction noise, while an October Tripadvisor reviewer says work is complete; Hilton's March schedule targeted late 2026. We'd skip it for a quiet, spacious retreat, but it's a strong pick for travelers spending most days exploring.

• Best for: Sightseers using the subway; Business travelers moving around Manhattan; Train arrivals via Penn Station

• Watch out for: Compact standard rooms and bathrooms; Street noise and uncertain renovation status; Mandatory daily destination fee

• Location: Busy Koreatown setting beside Herald Square transit, with Penn Station and major sights nearby.

• Rooms: Comfortable beds; space varies considerably by category, and standard bathrooms can be small.

• Cleanliness: Recent Expedia reviews are consistently positive about room cleanliness.

• Service: Helpful bell staff and welcoming employees are recurring strengths across Tripadvisor and Expedia.

• Amenities: On-site dining, bars and a 24-hour gym add useful convenience.

• Fees and surprises: Destination fee includes food-and-drink credit; confirm eligible outlets and remaining facade or renovation work.
