Axel's take: 5.7/10

A useful Chinatown location, but comfort and cleanliness are too inconsistent. a bare-bones, hostel-style 2-star walk-up in Chinatown, scored for what it is.

Manhattan Bowery Lodge is a bare-bones, hostel-style 2-star walk-up, not a conventional hotel. Its strongest argument is location: Chinatown restaurants, Little Italy and subway connections are close. Recent guests often praise helpful staff, and some find the simple accommodation perfectly adequate for a short, budget-focused visit. Still, Booking.com’s overall rating and Tripadvisor’s weaker feedback suggest this is a compromise, even for its class.

Rooms are exceptionally small, some lack windows, and many use shared bathrooms; confirm your exact room’s setup before booking. Thin walls and limited luggage space recur in reviews. Cleanliness reports vary sharply, with multiple 2026 guests describing dirty bathrooms or rodent sightings alongside positive housekeeping reports. We’d consider it only for undemanding travelers packing light; skip it if reliable hygiene, quiet or step-free access matters.

• Best for: budget travelers prioritizing location; short stays with minimal luggage

• Watch out for: tiny, sometimes windowless rooms and shared bathrooms; inconsistent cleanliness and repeated rodent reports; thin walls and stairs-only access

• Location: Convenient Chinatown base near Little Italy, restaurants and several subway connections.

• Rooms: Very cramped; window availability and private versus shared bathrooms depend on room type.

• Cleanliness: Mixed reports, including repeated recent complaints about bathrooms and rodents.

• Service: Helpfulness is a recurring strength, though communication receives some criticism.

• Amenities: Free Wi-Fi; guests report communal coffee, tea, a microwave and fridge.

• Fees and surprises: Confirm taxes, deposit terms and bathroom arrangements; access involves stairs without an elevator.
