Axel's take: 8.1/10

A characterful Manhattan base, strongest on location and staff rather than space and quiet. a historic mid-range boutique hotel in NoMad, scored for what it is.

Life Hotel is a historic mid-range boutique in NoMad, occupying the former Life Magazine headquarters. It’s a strong pick for travelers who want personality and easy sightseeing rather than full-service luxury. Expedia and Tripadvisor guests repeatedly praise clean rooms, comfortable beds and helpful staff, while Penn Station, Herald Square subway connections and the Empire State Building are within walking distance. Brass beds, marble bathrooms and the downstairs restaurant and cocktail spaces give it more character than a standard chain hotel.

The catch is room selection: entry-level rooms can be genuinely small, and recent guests describe street, bar or air-conditioning noise; some rear rooms lack natural light. There’s also a mandatory destination fee covering fairly ordinary extras. We’d choose it for an active city break, but skip it if spacious rooms and dependable silence are priorities.

• Best for: couples on sightseeing breaks; travelers arriving through Penn Station; boutique-hotel fans

• Watch out for: small entry-level rooms; variable noise and natural light; mandatory destination fee

• Location: Walkable NoMad location near Herald Square, Penn Station and the Empire State Building.

• Rooms: Distinctive vintage styling; sizes vary substantially, and some guests report noise or limited daylight.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across Expedia, Booking.com and Tripadvisor feedback.

• Service: Friendly, helpful staff attract repeated praise, despite occasional less positive experiences.

• Amenities: Mediterranean restaurant, lobby bar, basement lounge and fitness room; refrigerators available on request.

• Fees and surprises: Mandatory destination fee; Expedia also lists a nightly deposit, and parking is at a separate paid garage.
