Axel's take: 6.8/10

A convenient Chelsea base, but shared bathrooms and uneven upkeep demand realistic expectations. A budget townhouse hostel with private rooms and shared bathrooms near Penn Station, scored for what it is.

Lamartine Chelsea is a budget townhouse hostel with private bedrooms, not a conventional hotel. We'd consider it for the walkable Chelsea location near Penn Station, helpful staff and shared kitchens that make self-catering practical. The hotel advertises renovated rooms, and several 2026 Expedia guests describe clean, refreshed accommodation. It's a reasonable option for independent travelers who prioritize location over hotel comforts.

The compromises are substantial: some rooms are tiny, bathrooms are shared, and five floors come without an elevator. Across guest sites, bathroom upkeep receives mixed reports, while noise and unreliable heating recur alongside plenty of positive stays. Recent praise suggests improvement, not complete consistency. Hostelworld also lists cleaning-and-linen and card-payment fees; confirm your booking's full terms and arrival arrangements. We'd skip it for light sleepers, travelers with mobility limitations or anyone expecting an en-suite bathroom.

• Best for: Independent travelers prioritizing location; Solo travelers wanting a private bedroom; Guests who will use shared kitchens

• Watch out for: Shared bathrooms with uneven upkeep; Five-floor walk-up; no elevator; Noise and heating complaints

• Location: Strong access to Penn Station, Madison Square Garden and multiple subway lines.

• Rooms: Private singles and doubles; some are very small, though recent guests report refreshed interiors.

• Cleanliness: Many recent guests praise clean rooms; shared-bathroom cleaning and drainage remain inconsistent.

• Service: Helpful, welcoming staff are a recurring strength; confirm arrival instructions directly.

• Amenities: Three shared kitchens, seven shared bathrooms, free Wi-Fi and a backyard; no in-room TVs.

• Fees and surprises: Hostelworld lists cleaning-and-linen and card-payment fees; check booking-specific terms and arrival hours.
