Axel's take: 7.8/10

A useful downtown base if you can live with tiny rooms and street noise. a no-frills 2-star hotel beside Canal Street, scored for what it is.

JGSTAY–Soho is a no-frills 2-star hotel at the meeting point of SoHo, Chinatown and Little Italy. We'd pick it for sightseeing rather than spending time indoors: Canal Street subway access is excellent, and recent Hotels.com and Tripadvisor guests repeatedly praise clean rooms, comfortable beds and helpful staff. Private bathrooms, mini-fridges and a small complimentary continental breakfast make it a practical downtown base.

The compromises are substantial room-size limits and recurring street noise, which the hotel itself acknowledges. Breakfast is basic, and service feedback is positive overall rather than uniformly glowing. Housekeeping is by request, with possible extra charges; a refundable damage deposit is required, and recent guests report charges for storing bags after checkout. We'd skip it for light sleepers, travelers with lots of luggage or anyone needing room to work.

• Best for: solo sightseeing trips; couples traveling light; downtown shopping and dining

• Watch out for: tiny rooms with limited luggage space; Canal Street traffic noise; possible housekeeping and post-checkout storage charges

• Location: Excellent subway access beside Canal Street, with SoHo, Chinatown and Little Italy close by.

• Rooms: Compact private-bathroom rooms with air conditioning and mini-fridges; street noise is a recurring drawback.

• Cleanliness: Recent feedback is predominantly positive about room and bathroom cleanliness.

• Service: Helpful staff receive frequent praise, though some guests report less accommodating encounters.

• Amenities: Free Wi-Fi, elevator, lounge and a small continental breakfast served from 7–9 a.m.; no onsite parking.

• Fees and surprises: Refundable damage deposit required; requested housekeeping may cost extra, and guests report paid storage after checkout.
