Axel's take: 8.1/10

A practical Midtown base with helpful staff, but breakfast and elevator waits disappoint. A simple independent 3-star in Midtown’s Koreatown, scored for what it is.

Hotel Stanford is a simple independent 3-star in Koreatown, and a strong pick if sightseeing matters more than hotel polish. Herald Square subway, Penn Station and the Empire State Building are close by. Recent Expedia and Tripadvisor guests repeatedly praise clean rooms, comfortable beds and helpful staff. Included breakfast adds value, making this a sensible base for travelers spending most of their day exploring.

The compromises are those of an older city hotel: one elevator can mean waits, and some rooms face a neighboring wall rather than a skyline. Breakfast gets mixed feedback, with recurring complaints about limited variety and a crowded dining area. Street-facing rooms can pick up traffic noise; quieter rooms may sacrifice daylight. We’d skip it if you want stylish surroundings, guaranteed views or a leisurely hotel breakfast.

• Best for: Sightseers prioritizing location; Madison Square Garden visitors; Travelers seeking simple Midtown value

• Watch out for: Waits for the single elevator; Some rooms face a wall; Limited breakfast variety

• Location: Central Koreatown location near Herald Square subway, Penn Station and major Midtown sights.

• Rooms: Generally comfortable and functional; check whether your category guarantees a city view.

• Cleanliness: Broadly positive recent feedback, particularly on Expedia, despite occasional lapses.

• Service: Helpful, welcoming staff are a recurring strength; problem handling receives some mixed reports.

• Amenities: Included breakfast, free Wi-Fi, luggage storage and a 24-hour front desk cover the basics.

• Fees and surprises: No on-site parking; rollaway beds cost extra, and check-in starts at 4 p.m.
