Axel's take: 8.3/10

A strong downtown base for clean rooms and helpful staff, provided you pack light. a compact, no-frills hotel on the Chinatown–Lower East Side border, scored for what it is.

Hotel Richland LES is a compact, no-frills hotel on the Chinatown–Lower East Side border, and a strong pick for travelers who spend their days exploring. Recent Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise the helpful reception team, clean rooms and comfortable beds. Nearby subway stops and plenty of restaurants make it a practical downtown base; coffee, bottled water and snacks are appreciated extras rather than reasons to book.

The main compromise is space: rooms can feel cramped, particularly with multiple guests and luggage. Some guests also report sound carrying between rooms. Check the category carefully—the hotel's Standard Interior Queen is windowless and in the cellar. A mandatory daily facility fee also weakens the value proposition. We'd choose it for a sightseeing trip, but skip it if spacious rooms or reliable quiet are priorities.

• Best for: solo travelers and couples packing light; downtown sightseeing trips; travelers exploring Chinatown's restaurants

• Watch out for: small rooms and occasional neighbor noise; windowless cellar-level Interior Queen rooms; mandatory daily facility fee

• Location: Chinatown–Lower East Side border, within walking distance of East Broadway and Grand Street subway stations.

• Rooms: Compact rooms with comfortable beds; Interior Queens are windowless and cellar-level, and some guests report noise.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across recent Tripadvisor and Expedia feedback, despite occasional exceptions.

• Service: Helpful, welcoming reception staff are one of the most consistently praised features; reception operates around the clock.

• Amenities: Free Wi-Fi, coffee and tea, with in-room coffee makers; mini refrigerators are available on request.

• Fees and surprises: Mandatory daily facility fee and a deposit; no on-site parking, so confirm the full booking total.
