Axel's take: 8.3/10

Stylish and welcoming, with compact rooms and a destination fee to weigh. an upscale, design-led boutique hotel in NoMad, scored for what it is.

Hotel AKA NoMad is an upscale boutique hotel whose strongest assets are its Madison Avenue location, understated Piero Lissoni interiors and genuinely helpful staff. It’s a strong pick for couples and business travelers who prioritize design and convenience over extensive facilities. Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise the welcome, comfortable beds and clean rooms; the overall feedback remains firmly positive.

The compromises are practical: smaller rooms and bathrooms, subdued lighting, and compact elevators recur in reviews. Some guests also report wear or maintenance issues, so the finish is not uniformly polished. The hotel confirms a nightly destination fee covering basics such as Wi-Fi and gym access; breakfast and valet parking cost extra. We’d skip it if generous space and bright bathrooms matter more than boutique atmosphere.

• Best for: design-conscious couples; business travelers; sightseers exploring Manhattan

• Watch out for: compact rooms and dim bathrooms; nightly destination fee; small elevators and some maintenance complaints

• Location: Walkable NoMad base near the Empire State Building, Koreatown and subway connections.

• Rooms: Comfortable beds and distinctive design, but room sizes vary and bathrooms can feel cramped and dark.

• Cleanliness: Generally a strength across recent reviews, despite occasional housekeeping or maintenance lapses.

• Service: Warm, helpful staff are the most consistent cross-site highlight.

• Amenities: Lobby lounge-bar, mezzanine breakfast, outdoor terrace and a compact 24-hour Technogym fitness room.

• Fees and surprises: Nightly destination fee; breakfast, valet parking and pets incur additional charges.
