Axel's take: 7.8/10

A convenient Chelsea base with helpful staff, compact rooms and an unwelcome destination fee. a practical 3-star chain hotel near Penn Station, scored for what it is.

This is a practical 3-star chain hotel for travelers who prioritize getting around Manhattan over spending time in their room. We'd pick it for Penn Station connections or Madison Square Garden events. Recent Expedia and Tripadvisor guests repeatedly praise helpful staff, clean rooms and comfortable beds. Included hot breakfast and an afternoon wine hour add useful extras, while IHG advertises refreshed rooms and public spaces.

The main compromises are compact rooms, particularly with four people and luggage, and a mandatory nightly destination fee that weakens the value proposition. Noise reports vary, with some guests mentioning slamming doors despite others finding rooms quiet. Exterior-repair permits remain listed as open; confirm scaffolding and work schedules before booking. It's a good sightseeing base, but we'd skip it for a spacious family stay or a hotel-focused getaway.

• Best for: Penn Station arrivals; Madison Square Garden events; Sightseers traveling light

• Watch out for: Compact rooms for families; Mandatory nightly destination fee; Confirm exterior-work status

• Location: Convenient walking access to Penn Station, Madison Square Garden and subway connections.

• Rooms: Generally comfortable but compact; recent guests note some wear and inconsistent noise insulation.

• Cleanliness: Broadly positive across recent Expedia and Tripadvisor feedback, despite occasional complaints.

• Service: Friendly, accommodating front-desk staff are a consistent strength across sources.

• Amenities: Included hot breakfast, Wi-Fi, gym and patio; recent guests appreciate the afternoon wine hour.

• Fees and surprises: Expedia lists a nightly destination fee and security deposit; parking costs extra, and exterior-repair permits remain open.
