Axel's take: 8.1/10

A strong-value Queens base, provided passing trains won’t spoil your sleep. A simple, value-focused 3-star beside the railway in Long Island City, scored for what it is.

Feather Factory is a simple 3-star in Long Island City that gets the important budget-hotel basics right. Recent Expedia and Tripadvisor guests repeatedly praise clean rooms, comfortable beds and helpful staff. We'd pick it for good value and straightforward access to Manhattan: several subway stations are roughly a 10-minute walk away. The well-liked fifth-floor breakfast, with skyline views, adds appeal, while complimentary lobby coffee and a snack shop are useful extras.

The main compromise is the railway directly opposite. Some guests barely notice it; others report disruptive trains at night and early in the morning. Rooms are functional rather than spacious, and the industrial surroundings aren't the prettiest introduction to New York. Breakfast may cost extra, and a refundable deposit is required. It's a strong sightseeing base for travelers happy to walk; we'd skip it for light sleepers or anyone wanting Manhattan on the doorstep.

• Best for: Value-focused New York sightseers; Travelers comfortable using the subway; Short stays with simple room needs

• Watch out for: Passing trains overnight and early morning; Roughly 10-minute walk to subway stations; Breakfast inclusion varies by booking

• Location: Industrial Long Island City setting with several subway options within roughly a 10-minute walk.

• Rooms: Simple, sometimes compact rooms; comfortable beds draw praise, but railway noise varies by guest.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across recent Expedia and Tripadvisor reviews.

• Amenities: Free Wi-Fi, mini-fridges, lobby coffee, snack shop and fifth-floor breakfast with views.
