Axel's take: 8.2/10

A strong Midtown base, provided you can tolerate tight rooms and elevator waits. a practical mid-range chain hotel near Penn Station, scored for what it is.

This is a practical mid-range Fairfield, not a full-service luxury hotel despite its four-star listing. We'd pick it for easy access to Penn Station, Madison Square Garden and Midtown sightseeing. Recent Expedia and Tripadvisor guests repeatedly praise clean rooms, comfortable beds and friendly staff. Included hot breakfast adds useful value, while Marriott confirms a gym and lobby bar in this building shared with SpringHill Suites.

The recurring compromises are space and congestion: rooms and bathrooms can feel cramped, especially with four people and luggage, and breakfast seating fills up. Elevator waits appear across review sites, so allow extra time before trains or appointments. Some guests also mention noisy air-conditioning, although others report quiet nights. It's a strong choice for travelers spending their days out; we'd skip it for spacious family accommodation or leisurely, crowd-free mornings.

• Best for: train travelers using Penn Station; Midtown sightseeing; Madison Square Garden trips

• Watch out for: elevator waits at busy times; crowded breakfast seating; compact rooms and bathrooms

• Location: Convenient for Penn Station, Madison Square Garden and subways; Times Square is a walk away.

• Rooms: Comfortable beds, but limited luggage space; some guests report noisy air-conditioning.

• Cleanliness: Strong overall praise across recent Expedia and Tripadvisor reviews.

• Service: Friendly, helpful staff are a consistent strength in recent guest feedback.

• Amenities: Included hot breakfast, a 24-hour gym, lobby bar and guest laundry.

• Fees and surprises: Paid off-site parking; pet and package-handling fees apply; no hotel-provided airport shuttle.
