Axel's take: 7.9/10

A convenient Midtown base with useful extras, but cramped breakfasts and slow elevators. a practical 4-star Midtown high-rise with mostly studio-style rooms, scored for what it is.

This practical 4-star high-rise is a good pick for exploring Midtown, rather than a luxury escape or a sprawling suite hotel. Bryant Park, Herald Square and subway connections are close, with Times Square a walk away. Hilton advertises a recent renovation, and Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise comfortable, clean rooms and helpful staff. Included made-to-order breakfast and the evening reception add genuine value.

The catch is capacity: recent guests keep describing slow elevators and a breakfast lounge too small for the crowds. Studio layouts can also feel tight once the sofa bed is open, so don't assume the Embassy Suites name guarantees a separate bedroom. A mandatory daily destination charge adds another consideration, even with food-and-beverage credit included. We'd choose it for sightseeing convenience, but skip it for spacious family accommodation or an unhurried, upscale stay.

• Best for: first-time New York sightseers; couples exploring Midtown; travelers who value included breakfast

• Watch out for: slow elevators at busy times; crowded breakfast lounge; compact studios and mandatory destination charge

• Location: Walkable Midtown base near Bryant Park and Herald Square, south of Times Square itself.

• Rooms: Mostly compact studio-style layouts; check for a separate bedroom rather than assuming one.

• Cleanliness: Recent praise outweighs complaints, with clean rooms a recurring positive.

• Service: Helpful front-desk and bell staff receive repeated praise; problem handling gets some criticism.

• Amenities: Included breakfast and evening reception, fitness center, restaurant and seasonal terrace.

• Fees and surprises: Mandatory daily destination charge includes outlet and parking credits; parking is off-site and extra.
