Axel's take: 8.8/10

A stylish Broadway base with standout staff, provided you can travel light. a theater-inspired 4-star boutique hotel near Broadway, scored for what it is.

CIVILIAN is a theater-inspired 4-star boutique hotel that makes a strong case for choosing character over square footage. Its Broadway location, theatrical interiors and rooftop bar suit a show-filled city break. Recent Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise welcoming staff, clean rooms and comfortable beds; Booking.com’s strong overall ratings reinforce that picture. It’s a particularly good fit for solo travelers and couples who spend most of the day out.

The main compromise is space: entry-level Cozy rooms are genuinely tiny, especially with two suitcases. Choose a larger category if you’ll spend much time indoors. Recent Expedia guests also mention elevator waits. Check the resort fee, deposit and housekeeping inclusions before booking, and confirm rooftop opening hours. We’d skip it for a roomy, full-service luxury stay.

• Best for: Broadway-focused city breaks; Solo travelers packing light; Couples who prefer design to space

• Watch out for: Very compact entry-level rooms; Elevator waits at busy times; Resort fee and housekeeping extras

• Location: Excellent for Broadway, Times Square, Hell’s Kitchen restaurants and nearby subway stations.

• Rooms: Comfortable, thoughtfully designed rooms; Expedia lists Cozy Queens at just 130 square feet.

• Cleanliness: Strong recent praise across Tripadvisor and Expedia, backed by solid Booking.com cleanliness ratings.

• Service: Friendly, helpful staff are one of the most consistent positives across guest-review sites.

• Amenities: Carversteak, cocktail lounge and Starchild rooftop; listed health-club access is off-site.

• Fees and surprises: Expedia lists a nightly resort fee, damage deposit and paid housekeeping; confirm your booking’s inclusions.
