Axel's take: 8.5/10

A stylish Manhattan base with standout staff, provided you can live small. a 4-star boutique hotel with micro-rooms in central Manhattan, scored for what it is.

Arlo NoMad is a 4-star boutique hotel built around micro-rooms, not sprawling luxury. We'd pick it for a short Manhattan trip: the location makes sightseeing easy, and recent Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise helpful staff, clean rooms and city views. Booking.com's strong cleanliness and comfort ratings reinforce that picture. The diner and rooftop bar add appeal beyond the bedroom; a Sky room is worth considering if the view matters to you.

The main compromise is substantial: rooms measure roughly 150 square feet, so two people with luggage will feel squeezed. There's also a mandatory nightly urban fee, and gym access means walking to a partner facility rather than heading downstairs. It's a strong fit for solo travelers and light-packing couples who spend their days out. We'd skip it for families sharing one room or anyone expecting generous four-star space.

• Best for: solo city explorers; light-packing couples; short sightseeing stays

• Watch out for: roughly 150-square-foot rooms; mandatory nightly urban fee; gym is off-site

• Location: Central NoMad base near the Empire State Building, Koreatown and several subway stops.

• Rooms: Stylish micro-rooms for up to two guests; views depend on the room category.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across recent guest feedback and major booking-site ratings.

• Service: Warm, helpful front-desk staff earn repeated praise on Tripadvisor and Expedia.

• Amenities: NoMad Diner, a rooftop bar and a 24-hour bodega; fitness access is through a nearby partner gym.

• Fees and surprises: Mandatory nightly urban fee and a check-in security authorization; parking and some early or late check-outs cost extra.
