Axel's take: 7.4/10

A practical Midtown base if you can accept shared bathrooms and small rooms. A no-frills Midtown budget hotel with mostly shared bathrooms, scored for what it is.

Americana Inn is a no-frills budget hotel near Bryant Park, with private bedrooms but mostly shared bathrooms down the hall. It's a good pick for travelers who prioritize sightseeing over room space. Booking.com and Expedia guests repeatedly praise the central location, helpful staff and generally clean facilities. Shared kitchenettes add practical value, and the hotel says its communal bathrooms have been renovated.

The compromises are real: rooms are tiny, street noise can disturb sleep, and some guests report uncomfortable temperatures. Shared bathrooms generally receive positive feedback, but toiletries aren't always reliably supplied. Expedia also lists a nightly resort fee and a stay deposit, so check the full booking terms. We'd choose it for a short, budget-minded city break, but skip it if quiet nights, spacious rooms or a guaranteed en-suite bathroom matter.

• Best for: Budget-minded Midtown sightseers; Solo travelers on short stays; Travelers comfortable with shared bathrooms

• Watch out for: Most rooms share hallway bathrooms; Tiny rooms and street noise; Nightly resort fee and deposit

• Location: Near Bryant Park, Fifth Avenue and several subway lines; the strongest reason to book.

• Rooms: Small, simple private bedrooms with sinks; seasonal AC and some private-bathroom options.

• Cleanliness: Generally praised across booking sites, particularly shared bathrooms, with occasional lapses reported.

• Service: Helpful, friendly staff receive frequent praise, though problem handling gets some criticism.

• Amenities: Shared kitchenettes with microwaves and refrigerators, an elevator and a 24-hour front desk.

• Fees and surprises: Expedia lists a nightly resort fee, a stay deposit and charges for early check-in or late checkout.
