Axel's take: 8.5/10

A strong Midtown luxury pick, provided you choose your room carefully. a nature-inspired five-star boutique hotel near Central Park, scored for what it is.

1 Hotel Central Park is a nature-inspired five-star boutique hotel a block south of the park, and a strong pick for travelers who prefer warm wood and greenery to formal grandeur. Recent Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise the welcoming staff, clean rooms and comfortable beds. Jams, the restaurant and bar, earns its own enthusiastic mentions. We'd choose it for a stylish Midtown base with easy access to the park, museums and subway.

The main compromise is space: entry-level rooms are compact even for an expensive Manhattan hotel, and some face inward rather than toward the park. Check the exact room category rather than assuming the name promises a view. A mandatory daily amenity fee and separately charged valet parking also weaken the value proposition. We'd skip it if generous room dimensions matter more than design and location.

• Best for: design-minded couples; Central Park and museum weekends; travelers who prefer boutique-style luxury

• Watch out for: compact entry-level rooms; park views require the right category; mandatory daily amenity fee

• Location: A block south of Central Park, with convenient subway access and walkable Midtown sights.

• Rooms: Attractive natural finishes and well-reviewed beds; smaller categories trade space and views for location.

• Cleanliness: Recent guest feedback is strongly positive, especially on Expedia and Tripadvisor.

• Service: Warm, helpful staff are a recurring strength across recent reviews.

• Amenities: Jams restaurant and bar, fitness facilities, wellness programming and an availability-dependent house car.

• Fees and surprises: Daily amenity fee plus tax, paid valet parking and a daily incidental card hold; check room-view descriptions.
