Axel's take: 6.6/10

Friendly staff and useful basics, but room upkeep makes this a cautious budget pick. An older, no-frills 2-star roadside motel, now a Baymont by Wyndham, scored for what it is.

Hill Country Inn & Suites now operates as Baymont by Wyndham New Braunfels TX: an older, exterior-corridor budget motel off I-35, not a retreat in historic Gruene. We'd consider it for a short, practical stop rather than a destination stay. Guests repeatedly praise friendly staff, comfortable beds and convenient access to restaurants. Free parking, continental breakfast, a seasonal outdoor pool and a hot tub give it useful extras for its class.

The catch is inconsistent room condition. Many guests report clean, comfortable stays, but 2025–2026 feedback also describes worn carpets, musty smells, cleaning lapses and pests. Road noise recurs across sites, and breakfast is basic rather than a reason to book. We'd skip it if you're a light sleeper or want reliably fresh rooms; budget travelers should weigh those risks against the convenient location.

Best for: Budget travelers with a car; Short overnight stops
Watch out for: Inconsistent cleaning and room maintenance; Traffic noise and exterior room entrances; Basic breakfast
Location: Convenient off I-35 and Highway 46; Gruene and the main attractions require a drive.
Rooms: Comfortable beds earn praise, but worn furnishings, odors and maintenance problems recur.
Cleanliness: Many positive reports, offset by repeated cleaning and pest complaints in recent feedback.
Service: Friendly, helpful front-desk staff are the most consistent strength.
Amenities: Continental breakfast, seasonal outdoor pool, hot tub and laundry; the brand advertises free Wi-Fi.
Fees and surprises: Now branded Baymont; parking is free, while pets incur fees and a deposit.
