#6 of 9 hotels in Munras Avenue by Axel's take. Munras Avenue is #5 of 6 places to stay in Monterey, California. The best hotels in Munras Avenue, ranked · Where to stay in Monterey, California

Axel's take: 7.8/10

A good budget base for Monterey, with clean rooms but limited extras. a refreshed, no-frills 2-star motel on Munras Avenue, scored for what it is.

Monterey Surf Inn is a no-frills 2-star motel, and we'd choose it for a practical coastal stop rather than a hotel-centered getaway. The hotel says room updates began in 2024; recent Expedia and Tripadvisor guests repeatedly praise clean rooms, comfortable beds and good value. Free parking, microwaves and fridges make it useful for road trips, with shopping and restaurants nearby. Despite the name, this isn't a beachfront stay.

The compromises are small rooms, limited clothes storage and parking that can feel cramped when full. Staff earn plenty of praise, although problem handling gets mixed reports. Don't count on the pool shown in older listings: recent guests report it unavailable, and the official site instead advertises future recreation facilities. We'd skip it if swimming, breakfast or room to unpack matters more than a simple, comfortable base.

  • Best for: budget-conscious road trippers; couples on short sightseeing stays; travelers prioritizing clean, simple rooms

  • Watch out for: small rooms with limited clothes storage; tight parking when full; pool availability not confirmed

  • Location: Convenient Munras Avenue base near shopping and dining, not on the beach.

  • Rooms: Refreshed interiors and comfortable beds; some rooms have little space or storage.

  • Cleanliness: A consistent strength in recent reviews, supported by Booking.com's cleanliness score.

  • Service: Usually praised as friendly and helpful, with some complaints about resolving problems.

  • Amenities: Free Wi-Fi, microwaves, fridges and outdoor seating; breakfast is not reliably advertised.

  • Fees and surprises: Parking is free; confirm pool status and don't assume the planned recreation area is open.
