Axel's take: 8.9/10

A strong waterfront splurge, especially if you book an ocean-view room. an upscale 4-star waterfront hotel on Cannery Row, scored for what it is.

Monterey Plaza is an upscale 4-star waterfront hotel that earns its appeal through more than the view. Recent Tripadvisor, Booking.com and Expedia guests repeatedly praise clean, spacious rooms, comfortable beds and helpful staff. We'd choose it for a coastal getaway: the aquarium is walkable, Schooners offers waterfront dining, and the rooftop spa's hot tubs make good use of the setting. An ocean-view room is the clearest reason to splurge.

Choose your room carefully, though: inland categories don't deliver that same waterfront experience, and several Booking.com guests flag street noise. Some guests find the décor dated rather than luxurious, while paid valet parking and separately charged breakfast weaken the value. We'd skip it if contemporary design or a low total bill matters more than location, service and time overlooking the bay.

• Best for: couples booking an ocean-view getaway; families visiting the aquarium; travelers who enjoy spa facilities

• Watch out for: street noise in some inland rooms; paid valet parking and extra breakfast costs; some guests find the décor dated

• Location: Directly on the waterfront, with Cannery Row dining and the aquarium within walking distance.

• Rooms: Generally spacious and comfortable; views vary substantially by category, and some street-facing rooms receive noise complaints.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across recent reviews, backed by high cleanliness ratings on Booking.com and Expedia.

• Service: Recent guests overwhelmingly praise helpful, attentive staff, including valet and restaurant teams.

• Amenities: Rooftop spa hot tubs, an ocean-view gym, waterfront restaurants and a separate family-friendly hot-tub terrace.

• Fees and surprises: Valet parking carries a nightly charge; EV charging and breakfast cost extra, and ocean views aren't included in every category.
