#5 of 9 hotels in Pacific Grove by Axel's take. Pacific Grove is #3 of 6 places to stay in Monterey, California. The best hotels in Pacific Grove, ranked · Where to stay in Monterey, California

Axel's take: 7.8/10

Choose it for Victorian character and coastal walks, not modern-hotel polish. A historic 3-star Victorian inn in downtown Pacific Grove, scored for what it is.

Centrella is a historic 3-star Victorian inn that makes a good base for exploring Pacific Grove on foot. Restaurants are close, Lovers Point is a short walk away, and the garden and antique-filled interiors give it genuine character. Booking.com and Expedia guests repeatedly praise the location and welcoming staff. Complimentary continental breakfast and the hotel's wine-and-cookies ritual add to the appeal for couples who prefer an old-fashioned inn to a standard hotel.

The trade-off is uneven room comfort and upkeep. Recent reviews across sites mention compact rooms, worn furnishings and sound carrying between rooms; cleanliness is generally rated positively, but some guests flag tired linens or carpets. Breakfast is light rather than a cooked spread, parking is limited, and upper floors require stairs. We'd skip it if spacious rooms, reliable soundproofing or step-free access without advance planning are priorities.

Best for: Couples who enjoy historic inns; Walkable coastal weekends; Travelers exploring Pacific Grove
Watch out for: Small rooms and sound transfer; Uneven upkeep in some rooms; Limited parking; no elevator
Location: Downtown Pacific Grove, close to restaurants and a short walk from Lovers Point.
Rooms: Individual Victorian rooms, suites and cottages; size and condition vary, so choose the category carefully.
Cleanliness: Generally positive ratings, tempered by recurring reports of worn carpets and tired linens.
Service: Friendly, helpful staff earn frequent praise, though some recent guests report inconsistent follow-through.
Amenities: Light continental breakfast, Wi-Fi, wine and cookies; upper floors are stair-access only.
Fees and surprises: Parking is free but limited; pets in designated rooms and extra adults incur charges, and an incidental hold applies.
