Axel's take: 9.1/10

A standout budget base for downtown Mayagüez, with warm service and historic character. a simple, historic 2-star inn in downtown Mayagüez, scored for what it is.

Hotel Colonial is a simple, historic 2-star inn that gets the budget essentials unusually right. Recent Tripadvisor and Expedia guests consistently praise its cleanliness, welcoming staff and walkable location near Plaza Colón, restaurants and cafés. We'd pick it for an affordable city stay with more character than a standard budget hotel. Free parking is a particularly useful bonus downtown.

The trade-offs are practical: rooms vary in size, some are compact, and furnishings are straightforward rather than stylish. A few guests mention street or morning noise, so request a quieter room if you're sensitive. There is no elevator, and the hotel explicitly says it has no pool. This is a downtown base, not a beachfront property; skip it if your priorities are resort facilities, step-free access throughout or spending the day at the hotel.

  • Best for: budget-conscious city explorers; short business stays; travelers who enjoy historic buildings

  • Watch out for: No elevator; Some compact rooms and occasional street noise; No pool or beachfront setting

  • Location: Central downtown setting near Plaza Colón, the cathedral, cafés and restaurants—not beachfront.

  • Rooms: Simple, air-conditioned rooms with smart TVs; sizes vary, with some described as compact.

  • Cleanliness: A consistent strength across recent Tripadvisor, Expedia and Trip.com feedback.

  • Service: Guests repeatedly praise friendly, helpful staff and their local knowledge.

  • Amenities: Free Wi-Fi and parking, 24-hour reception and a terrace; no pool or elevator.

  • Fees and surprises: The official site states no resort fees; extra-guest charges apply.
