Axel's take: 8.9/10

A strong Soho base with standout staff, comfortable beds and a few room-layout compromises. a boutique 4-star in Málaga’s walkable Soho district, scored for what it is.

ICON Malabar, now called Malabar by Petit Palace, is a boutique 4-star we’d confidently shortlist for a Málaga city break. Its Soho location puts the old town, market and waterfront within easy walking reach. Recent Tripadvisor, Booking.com and Expedia guests repeatedly praise helpful staff, comfortable beds and clean, attractively furnished rooms. Breakfast also earns consistent approval. The appeal is thoughtful comfort and personal service rather than extensive leisure facilities.

Choose your room carefully: some guests find the smaller categories tight, clothes storage limited or bathroom layouts awkward. Occasional nearby bar noise is worth considering, although many guests describe quiet nights. Drivers must use nearby paid parking and walk with their luggage. We’d choose it for exploring on foot, but look elsewhere if generous room space or doorstep car access matters most.

• Best for: couples on a city break; sightseeing without a car; travelers who prioritize personal service

• Watch out for: Room size, storage and bathroom layouts vary; Occasional noise from nearby bars; Pedestrian street; parking is off-site

• Location: Walkable Soho base near Calle Larios, Atarazanas Market and the waterfront.

• Rooms: Comfortable beds and appealing interiors; smaller rooms and limited hanging space draw some criticism.

• Cleanliness: Strong cross-site praise for housekeeping outweighs isolated negative reports.

• Service: Helpful, welcoming reception staff are the most consistent highlight across recent reviews.

• Amenities: Buffet breakfast, free Wi-Fi and pet-friendly rooms; the official site explicitly welcomes families, despite Expedia’s adults-only listing.

• Fees and surprises: Breakfast may cost extra; nearby parking is paid, and pet charges depend on booking channel.
