Axel's take: 8.7/10

A strong old-town base with standout staff, but lively streets can interrupt sleep. a historic 4-star boutique hotel in Málaga’s pedestrian old town, scored for what it is.

Hotel Larios Málaga is a historic 4-star boutique hotel whose biggest asset is its position beside Plaza de la Constitución. It’s a strong pick for exploring Málaga on foot, with Art Deco public spaces and a rooftop cocktail terrace adding character. Recent Expedia and Tripadvisor guests repeatedly praise the helpful staff, cleanliness and comfortable rooms; Booking.com feedback reinforces the enthusiasm for the location and service.

The main compromise is noise: street-facing rooms overlook a lively pedestrian thoroughfare, and some Tripadvisor guests also report rooftop music. Management recommends requesting an interior room if you’re sensitive to sound. Several Booking.com and Expedia guests flag bathrooms needing updating, so don’t expect uniformly fresh interiors. There’s no on-site parking, and this is a city sightseeing base, not a beachfront hotel. We’d skip it for guaranteed quiet or easy car access.

• Best for: couples on a city break; sightseeing without a car; travelers who enjoy lively surroundings

• Watch out for: street noise and occasional rooftop music; some older bathrooms; no on-site parking

• Location: Excellent pedestrian old-town position beside Plaza de la Constitución; not beachfront.

• Rooms: Comfortable rooms draw praise, but outlooks vary and some bathrooms need updating.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across recent guest feedback.

• Service: Helpful, welcoming reception staff are repeatedly singled out.

• Amenities: Rooftop cocktail bar, buffet breakfast and free Wi-Fi are the main draws.

• Fees and surprises: Breakfast may cost extra; Room Mate ceased operating the hotel in 2023.
