Axel's take: 7.0/10

A practical Universal base, but tired rooms and limited extras keep expectations modest. A budget 3-star motor inn near Universal Studios, scored for what it is.

Mikado is a budget 3-star motor inn, better suited to sleeping between outings than spending the day at the hotel. We'd consider it for a short, car-based Universal Studios trip: the park is roughly five miles away, and guests repeatedly praise helpful staff and comfortable beds. Fridges and microwaves add everyday convenience.

The catch is uneven upkeep. Tripadvisor and Trip.com guests describe worn carpets and dated furnishings; newer Expedia reviews show some remodeled rooms, but lingering maintenance and odor complaints. Freeway noise can intrude, parking costs extra, and breakfast is essentially drinks and packaged snacks. Booking.com lists the hot tub closed through January 5, 2027; October guests also report pool-maintenance problems, so confirm swimming availability. We'd skip it for a pool-focused family stay or reliably fresh interiors.

• Best for: Budget-conscious Universal visitors with a car; Short stays visiting family in the Valley

• Watch out for: Uneven room condition and freeway noise; Paid parking and snack-only breakfast; Closed hot tub; confirm pool condition

• Location: About five miles from Universal Studios; most practical with a car.

• Rooms: Comfortable beds, fridges and microwaves; furnishings and refurbishment vary, with noise in some rooms.

• Cleanliness: Many guests report clean rooms, but stained carpets and odors recur across sites.

• Service: Friendly, helpful staff are a consistent strength, though problem handling receives occasional criticism.

• Amenities: Free Wi-Fi and an advertised outdoor pool; hot tub closed through January 5, 2027, with recent pool-condition complaints.

• Fees and surprises: Parking carries a separate charge; included breakfast is drinks and packaged snacks, not a full meal.
