Axel's take: 7.4/10

A practical Venice-area base, provided you can accept dated rooms and traffic noise. A no-frills roadside motel near Venice and Marina del Rey, scored for what it is.

Jolly Roger is a no-frills roadside motel, not a beach resort, and we'd consider it for a budget-minded Westside stay. Free parking and access to Venice and Marina del Rey are its strongest selling points; the beach is roughly a half-hour walk rather than outside the door. Recent Expedia guests repeatedly praise clean, spacious rooms and helpful staff, while Booking.com and Tripadvisor feedback supports its usefulness as a simple overnight base.

The trade-off is an aging property: furnishings and bedding draw criticism, and street-facing rooms can suffer noticeable traffic noise. Ask for a room away from Washington Boulevard. Don't book around the pool or hot tub: closure reports and conflicting amenity listings leave their availability uncertain. We'd skip it for a polished beach holiday or if quiet sleep and dependable leisure facilities are priorities.

• Best for: Budget-minded Westside visitors; Travelers with a car; Short Venice and marina stays

• Watch out for: Traffic noise in street-facing rooms; Dated furnishings and bedding; Uncertain pool and hot-tub availability

• Location: Convenient for Venice and Marina del Rey, but allow roughly 30 minutes to walk to the beach.

• Rooms: Often described as spacious; dated furnishings and road noise are recurring drawbacks.

• Cleanliness: Recent feedback is mostly positive, though room condition and linen complaints prevent a uniformly strong verdict.

• Service: Helpful staff earn frequent praise, with some contrary reports about problem handling.

• Amenities: Free Wi-Fi and room refrigerators are listed; confirm pool and hot-tub access and don't assume breakfast is included.

• Fees and surprises: Free on-site parking is limited; expect a damage deposit.
