Axel's take: 7.7/10

A comfortable downtown base with historic character, but fees and limited dining dilute its appeal. A historic 4-star boutique hotel in downtown LA’s Financial District, scored for what it is.

Hilton Checkers is a historic 4-star boutique hotel that works best as a practical downtown base rather than a luxury escape. Recent Expedia and Trip.com guests repeatedly praise clean rooms, comfortable beds and helpful staff. The Financial District setting suits business trips and downtown sightseeing, while the rooftop terrace adds skyline views. We’d consider it a good choice when downtown is the focus of your visit.

The compromises are compact rooms in some categories, occasional reports of tired bathrooms and a mandatory destination charge plus costly valet parking. Several guests also describe feeling uncomfortable walking nearby after dark. Dining is more limited than older listings suggest: Hilton currently describes breakfast and an evening bar with light bites, not an all-day restaurant. Skip it if you want spacious, consistently polished rooms or extensive hotel facilities.

• Best for: Downtown business travelers; Short downtown sightseeing stays; Travelers who appreciate historic hotels

• Watch out for: Mandatory destination charge and costly valet; Some compact rooms and dated bathrooms; Mixed comfort walking nearby after dark

• Location: Convenient for downtown attractions and Metro; some guests report discomfort walking nearby at night.

• Rooms: Comfortable beds earn praise; room sizes vary, and some guests find bathrooms dated.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across recent guest feedback and booking-site category ratings.

• Service: Mostly friendly and helpful, with occasional reports of unhelpful front-desk interactions.

• Amenities: Rooftop terrace, fitness center, paid breakfast and evening bar; dining is limited.

• Fees and surprises: Mandatory daily destination charge; valet and breakfast cost extra, with no hotel self-parking.
