#2 of 6 hotels in University of Kentucky by Axel's take. University of Kentucky is #2 of 6 places to stay in Lexington, Kentucky. The best hotels in University of Kentucky, ranked · Where to stay in Lexington, Kentucky

Axel's take: 8.7/10

A strong boutique pick for spacious rooms and good food, rather than full-service luxury. an independent upscale boutique hotel a short drive from downtown, scored for what it is.

Elwood is an independent upscale boutique hotel that makes a strong case for staying outside downtown Lexington. Its colorful design has personality, but the more convincing draw is practical: generous rooms, comfortable beds and free self-parking. Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise cleanliness, while Fiddletree Kitchen & Bar earns enough compliments to count as a genuine reason to book. We'd shortlist it for a couples' weekend or a University of Kentucky visit with a car.

The trade-off is that boutique style doesn't always mean polished service. Tripadvisor includes some complaints about unresponsive staff, although recent Expedia feedback is overwhelmingly positive. Room layouts and furnishings vary, breakfast generally costs extra, and late checkout isn't something to count on. We'd skip it if walking straight into downtown nightlife or having consistently attentive luxury service matters most.

  • Best for: couples exploring Lexington by car; University of Kentucky visitors; families wanting a roomy suite

  • Watch out for: not a downtown doorstep location; breakfast generally costs extra; room layouts and service can vary

  • Location: A useful driving base for downtown, UK and Keeneland, rather than a walk-everywhere address.

  • Rooms: Spacious by boutique standards, with comfortable beds; the hotel explicitly says styles vary.

  • Cleanliness: Strong praise across guest sites outweighs occasional reports of inconsistent upkeep.

  • Service: Usually described as friendly and helpful, with some complaints about responsiveness and flexibility.

  • Amenities: Fiddletree restaurant and bar, a fitness center, free Wi-Fi and free self-parking.

  • Fees and surprises: Breakfast is generally extra; pets carry a nonrefundable fee, with additional cleaning charges possible.
