#1 of 9 hotels in Higashiyama & Kiyomizu by Axel's take. Higashiyama & Kiyomizu is #6 of 7 places to stay in Kyoto. The best hotels in Higashiyama & Kiyomizu, ranked · Where to stay in Kyoto

Axel's take: 9.2/10

A standout four-star for comfortable rooms, excellent baking and exploring eastern Kyoto. a design-led 4-star hotel in Higashiyama, scored for what it is.

Nohga is a design-led 4-star in Higashiyama that gets the important things unusually right. Recent Expedia, Tripadvisor and Trip.com guests consistently praise clean rooms, comfortable beds and helpful staff. The lobby bakery, CICON restaurant and rooftop bar give it more personality than a standard sightseeing base. We'd choose it for exploring Kiyomizu and Gion on foot, with genuinely appealing places to eat and unwind back at the hotel.

Choose your room carefully: entry-level Queens are compact, and standard Queens and Kings have showers rather than tubs. The main-road setting isn't a secluded retreat, and Kyoto Station access takes more planning than staying beside the station. Rooftop drinks depend on weather; CICON also has private-event closures on October 24 and November 7 and 17, 2026. We'd skip it for station-first convenience or a traditional ryokan experience.

  • Best for: couples who appreciate contemporary design; Higashiyama sightseeing on foot; travelers who enjoy hotel dining

  • Watch out for: compact entry-level Queen rooms; less convenient for Kyoto Station; weather-dependent rooftop and private-event dining closures

  • Location: Walkable for eastern Kyoto sights; the hotel lists Kiyomizu-Gojo Station seven minutes away on foot.

  • Rooms: Queens start at 19 square meters; standard Kings are 23, with shower-only bathrooms in both categories.

  • Cleanliness: A clear strength across recent guest feedback, with very high cleanliness ratings.

  • Service: Helpful, welcoming staff earn consistent praise across several review sites.

  • Amenities: Bakery, CICON restaurant, rooftop bar, meditation room, small gym and guest laundry.

  • Fees and surprises: City accommodation tax is charged separately; limited off-site parking costs extra, and CICON has scheduled private-event closures.
