#6 of 9 hotels in Chinatown & Merdeka Square by Axel's take. Chinatown & Merdeka Square is #2 of 6 places to stay in Kuala Lumpur. The best hotels in Chinatown & Merdeka Square, ranked · Where to stay in Kuala Lumpur

Axel's take: 7.5/10

A good-value Chinatown base, with spacious rooms but uneven comfort. a budget-friendly 3-star hotel in Kuala Lumpur’s Chinatown, scored for what it is.

The 5 Elements is a budget-friendly 3-star hotel whose strongest feature is its Chinatown address: Petaling Street, markets and plentiful places to eat are close by. It’s a good pick for travelers who spend their days exploring rather than using hotel facilities. Tripadvisor and Trip.com guests repeatedly praise the generous room sizes and helpful staff, while Booking.com and Expedia ratings point to a good, rather than exceptional, stay.

The trade-off is an aging property with inconsistent room comfort. Recent guests mention worn furnishings, variable beds and noisy or poorly controlled air-conditioning. Cleanliness generally earns positive feedback, though housekeeping misses recur. Breakfast is simple, with limited variety. Tripadvisor guests also reported nearby construction noise in early 2026; whether that work continues is unconfirmed. We’d skip it for light sleepers or anyone expecting freshly renovated rooms.

  • Best for: budget-conscious city explorers; Chinatown food lovers; families seeking connecting rooms

  • Watch out for: dated rooms and variable beds; street noise and air-conditioning issues; nearby construction reported in early 2026; current status unconfirmed

  • Location: Excellent for Chinatown dining and markets, with rail stations within walking distance.

  • Rooms: Spacious for the class, but furnishings, mattresses and air-conditioning show uneven upkeep.

  • Cleanliness: Generally well reviewed, with recurring but not dominant housekeeping and bathroom complaints.

  • Service: Helpful reception staff draw repeated praise across guest-review sites.

  • Amenities: Restaurant, simple buffet breakfast, free Wi-Fi and limited parking; Booking.com’s Wi-Fi rating is weak.

  • Fees and surprises: A refundable deposit is required; breakfast may cost extra, and parking spaces are limited.
