#9 of 9 hotels in Chow Kit & Jalan TAR by Axel's take. Chow Kit & Jalan TAR is #5 of 6 places to stay in Kuala Lumpur. The best hotels in Chow Kit & Jalan TAR, ranked · Where to stay in Kuala Lumpur

Axel's take: 6.5/10

A handy budget base, but worn rooms and uneven upkeep limit its appeal. an aging budget 3-star near Masjid India’s shops and markets, scored for what it is.

Silka Maytower is an aging budget 3-star whose strongest asset is its location opposite Jakel Mall, close to Masjid India shopping and several rail stations. It makes sense for travelers spending most of their time exploring Kuala Lumpur rather than enjoying the hotel. Tripadvisor, Expedia and Trip.com guests regularly praise the convenient setting and friendly staff; some also find the rooms comfortable and good value.

The recurring drawback is upkeep, not simply unfashionable décor. Recent reviews describe worn carpets, tired bathrooms and faulty fittings, while cleanliness varies and cockroach reports appear across booking sites. The hotel advertises a pool and gym, but recent guests question their maintenance, including broken gym equipment. We'd consider it for a short, location-first budget stay, but skip it if dependable cleanliness, modern rooms or usable fitness facilities are priorities.

  • Best for: location-first budget travelers; Masjid India shopping trips; short sightseeing stays

  • Watch out for: uneven cleaning and recurring insect reports; worn bathrooms and faulty fittings; poorly maintained fitness facilities

  • Location: Opposite Jakel Mall, near Masjid India shopping; Bandaraya station is roughly seven minutes away on foot.

  • Rooms: Standard rooms start at 21 m²; recurring complaints concern worn carpets, aging bathrooms and maintenance.

  • Cleanliness: Mixed reports: many find rooms acceptable, but recent guests also describe dirty surfaces and cockroaches.

  • Service: Friendly, helpful staff earn frequent praise, though problem handling is less consistent.

  • Amenities: Pool, gym and restaurant are advertised; recent reviews flag pool upkeep and broken gym equipment.

  • Fees and surprises: Self-parking costs extra; Expedia lists check-in ending at midnight with no after-hours arrivals.
