Axel's take: 7.3/10

A practical sightseeing base where location outshines room quality. a no-frills 3-star beside Central Market, scored for what it is.

Pacific Express is a no-frills 3-star beside Central Market, and we'd choose it for exploring old Kuala Lumpur rather than spending much time indoors. Chinatown, Merdeka Square and rail connections are within walking distance. Recent guests repeatedly praise the convenience and value; many also find the rooms comfortable and staff friendly. The rooftop pool is a useful extra for this class, though the hotel says both it and the gym require stairs for the final floor.

The compromises are uneven housekeeping, aging fixtures and poor corridor soundproofing, with several recent guests mentioning stained linen or disturbed sleep. Standard rooms have no windows, so choose your category carefully. Breakfast attracts repeated criticism, and Expedia lists the dining venue as closed October 2–December 31 annually; confirm arrangements before booking breakfast. It's a sensible budget base, but we'd skip it for light sleepers or anyone wanting consistently polished rooms.

  • Best for: budget-conscious sightseers; Chinatown food and market explorers; travelers using public transport

  • Watch out for: corridor noise and uneven housekeeping; windowless standard rooms; listed seasonal dining closure

  • Location: The main strength: Central Market, heritage sights and rail stations within walking distance.

  • Rooms: Basic, aging rooms; standard categories are windowless and soundproofing draws repeated complaints.

  • Cleanliness: Many guests report clean rooms, but stained linen and inconsistent housekeeping recur.

  • Service: Often friendly and helpful, with less consistent handling of complaints.

  • Amenities: Rooftop outdoor pool and gym advertised open 9am–7pm, reached by stairs from level nine.

  • Fees and surprises: Cash deposit required; Expedia lists an annual October 2–December 31 dining closure, so confirm breakfast availability.
