Axel's take: 8.8/10

Simple beachfront rooms, standout staff and a pool that makes this a strong budget pick. a simple 2-star beachfront bungalow-and-hostel stay, scored for what it is.

Sarana is a simple 2-star beachfront bungalow-and-hostel stay in Baan Tai, and we'd put it high on the list for a budget beach break. Booking.com and Tripadvisor guests consistently praise the helpful staff, pool overlooking the sea and good-value restaurant. Recent reviews also broadly support clean, comfortable accommodation. Air-conditioning, hot showers, free paddleboards and drinking-water refills give it more substance than the basic rooms suggest.

Choose it for relaxed days around the pool, not polished interiors or full-service resort comforts. Room standards are straightforward, some guests find the beds firm, and mosquitoes can get inside. Shops and restaurants are walkable, but exploring farther afield means arranging transport. We'd skip it if you want luxury finishes; families should also note that Booking.com currently lists it as adults-only.

  • Best for: budget-minded couples; solo travelers wanting dorms with a pool; relaxed beachfront breaks

  • Watch out for: basic rooms and some firm beds; mosquitoes can get indoors; listed as adults-only

  • Location: On Baan Tai beach, with restaurants and shops within walking distance; transport helps for island exploring.

  • Rooms: Private bungalows and a shared dorm, with air-conditioning and hot showers; expect simple furnishings.

  • Cleanliness: Broadly positive across major sites, with occasional housekeeping lapses rather than a dominant complaint.

  • Service: Helpful, welcoming reception staff are the most consistent strength across guest reviews.

  • Amenities: Beachfront pool, restaurant, bar, yoga space, free paddleboards and drinking-water refills.

  • Fees and surprises: Laundry, massages and transfers cost extra; payment-method listings conflict, so confirm before arrival.
