Axel's take: 8.8/10

Spacious rooms and welcoming service make this a strong downtown choice, despite extra fees. an upscale 4-star boutique hotel beside Knoxville’s World’s Fair Park, scored for what it is.

The Tennessean is an upscale 4-star boutique hotel beside World’s Fair Park, and a strong pick for travelers who want downtown convenience with more personal service. Recent Expedia and Tripadvisor guests repeatedly praise the spacious rooms, comfortable beds, cleanliness and welcoming staff. Market Square is within walking distance, while the Drawing Room’s dining and afternoon tea give the hotel appeal beyond its bedrooms.

The main catch is the extras: a mandatory daily urban amenity fee applies, and on-site parking is valet-only and charged separately. The fee includes local car service and fitness-room access, but there’s no swimming pool. A minority of recent guests describe slow dining service or poor communication about charges and benefits. We’d choose it for a comfortable city break, but skip it if you want extensive leisure facilities or fewer add-on charges.

• Best for: couples on a downtown city break; convention attendees; travelers who value spacious rooms

• Watch out for: mandatory daily urban amenity fee; paid valet-only on-site parking; no swimming pool

• Location: Beside World’s Fair Park and the convention center, within walking distance of Market Square.

• Rooms: Generously sized, with comfortable beds and large bathrooms; only selected categories overlook the park.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across recent guest reviews, without a recurring cleanliness problem.

• Service: Warm, helpful staff earn frequent praise; occasional dining delays and communication lapses temper the luxury promise.

• Amenities: Drawing Room restaurant and bar, afternoon tea, fitness center and local car service; no pool.

• Fees and surprises: Mandatory daily amenity fee, separate valet charges and a pet fee; public self-parking is off-site.
