Axel's take: 8.8/10

Strong on rooms, skyline views and pool time, less convincing on extras. a design-led luxury hotel beside Buffalo Bayou Park, scored for what it is.

Thompson Houston is a design-led luxury hotel beside Buffalo Bayou Park, and we'd pick it for a stylish weekend rather than a purely practical downtown stop. Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise spacious rooms, large bathrooms, cleanliness and helpful staff. Floor-to-ceiling windows and the expansive rooftop pool make the skyline part of the experience; a full-service spa and good fitness options round out the appeal.

The luxury experience isn't entirely seamless. Alongside strong service feedback, some guests report delayed room readiness or uneven valet and pool service. Noise crops up in reviews, though it isn't a universal complaint. A daily destination fee and separately charged valet parking also weaken the value. It's a strong pick for couples and pool-focused staycations; we'd look elsewhere for an all-inclusive-feeling stay or a location directly in downtown's core.

• Best for: couples on a stylish weekend; pool-focused staycations; runners and cyclists using bayou trails

• Watch out for: daily destination fee and paid valet; occasional traffic and neighboring-room noise; some check-in and service inconsistencies

• Location: Beside Buffalo Bayou Park, just outside downtown; excellent for trails, less central for downtown sightseeing.

• Rooms: Spacious, modern rooms with large bathrooms and floor-to-ceiling windows; some guests flag noise.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across guest ratings, despite occasional exceptions.

• Service: Mostly warm and helpful, with some reports of delayed room readiness and uneven valet or pool service.

• Amenities: Heated rooftop pool, full-service spa, 24-hour gym, adjacent fitness-club access, bicycles and dining.

• Fees and surprises: Daily destination fee; on-site parking is paid valet only, and the house car is drop-off only with limited availability.
