Axel's take: 8.5/10

A stylish downtown base with comfortable rooms, though service can miss the mark. a design-forward upscale hotel in downtown Houston, scored for what it is.

The Laura is a design-forward upscale hotel that makes a strong base for downtown Houston, especially Toyota Center events and business trips. Its bright rooms, generous bathrooms and rooftop pool give it more character than a standard business hotel. Expedia and Tripadvisor guests repeatedly praise cleanliness, comfortable rooms and welcoming staff; recent feedback remains largely positive. We'd choose it for a city weekend with restaurants, cocktails and some pool time built in.

The trade-offs are expensive valet parking and less consistent follow-through when something goes wrong. Recent reviews across sites flag occasional maintenance and billing problems, despite the broader service praise. Management also says pool furnishings are being refreshed after wear complaints. Refrigerators are available on request rather than guaranteed in every room. We'd skip it if you expect flawless luxury service or inexpensive parking.

• Best for: couples on a downtown weekend; Toyota Center concert and game trips; downtown business travelers

• Watch out for: expensive valet parking; occasional maintenance and billing problems; pool furnishings being refreshed

• Location: Walkable to Toyota Center, House of Blues and Discovery Green, with METRORail nearby.

• Rooms: Bright, comfortable rooms with spacious bathrooms; request a refrigerator if needed.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across recent reviews, with some criticism of pool furniture condition.

• Service: Staff receive frequent praise, but problem resolution and billing are less consistent.

• Amenities: Rooftop outdoor pool, spa, fitness facilities, Hull & Oak restaurant and a cocktail bar.

• Fees and surprises: Valet parking and breakfast cost extra; pets incur a nonrefundable fee, and oversized trucks cannot use the garage.
