Axel's take: 8.4/10

A strong downtown base for comfortable rooms and rooftop drinks, with occasional service hiccups. an upscale 4-star downtown hotel with a lively rooftop bar, scored for what it is.

Le Méridien Houston Downtown is an upscale 4-star that makes a strong base for downtown business, baseball and nights out. Recent Expedia guests repeatedly praise clean, comfortable rooms and welcoming staff; Booking.com also scores cleanliness well. We'd choose it for that dependable core, the convenient location near Discovery Green and the skyline views from Z on 23. Breakfast at Zutro earns notably enthusiastic feedback, too.

The trade-off is that upscale doesn't always mean seamless. Tripadvisor reviews describe occasional housekeeping and communication lapses, although the broader service picture remains positive. Valet parking is a substantial extra, breakfast inclusion depends on your booking, and the rooftop can feel more like a nightlife venue than a quiet hotel lounge. We'd skip it if hushed public spaces and consistently polished service matter more than location and atmosphere.

• Best for: downtown business travelers; baseball and concert weekends; couples who enjoy rooftop nightlife

• Watch out for: costly valet parking; lively, sometimes crowded rooftop; occasional housekeeping and communication lapses

• Location: Central downtown base near Discovery Green, Daikin Park and dining.

• Rooms: Generally comfortable and modern; some guests find the lighting insufficient.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across recent Expedia feedback and Booking.com's category ratings.

• Service: Warm staff receive frequent praise, with occasional coordination and follow-through problems.

• Amenities: Zutro restaurant, Z on 23 rooftop bar and a 24-hour gym; rooftop operation is weather-dependent.

• Fees and surprises: Valet and pets cost extra; check breakfast inclusion, and expect reception on the second floor.
