#5 of 7 hotels in Cho Lon (Chinatown) by Axel's take. Cho Lon (Chinatown) is #5 of 6 places to stay in Ho Chi Minh City. The best hotels in Cho Lon (Chinatown), ranked · Where to stay in Ho Chi Minh City

Axel's take: 7.1/10

A workable Cholon budget base, but room quality needs checking. a no-frills 2-star hotel in Cholon, scored for what it is.

Sao Mai is a no-frills 2-star in Cholon, best considered for a budget stay near Chinatown’s temples, markets and eateries rather than District 1 sightseeing. We'd consider it if location and keeping costs down matter more than polish. Trip.com and Expedia guests both praise friendly staff, and late-2025 stays include positive reports about cleanliness. Air-conditioned rooms, free Wi-Fi and family-sized options cover the essentials.

The catch is consistency. Recent Trip.com feedback includes a room that differed from its photos, while older reports flag sound carrying between rooms and uneven bathroom upkeep. Expedia’s overall feedback is noticeably weaker than Google’s, so this isn't a reliably comfortable all-rounder. Confirm the exact room and bed arrangement before booking; we'd skip it for a quiet retreat or a first visit centered on downtown attractions.

Best for: budget travelers exploring Cholon; families needing multiple beds
Watch out for: uneven room condition and photo accuracy; older reports of poor sound insulation; away from District 1 sightseeing
Location: Cholon base near temples, eateries and Binh Tay Market; downtown sightseeing generally requires transport.
Rooms: Basic air-conditioned doubles and larger family rooms; confirm current photos and the precise bed setup.
Cleanliness: Late-2025 praise is encouraging, but older negative reports mean consistency remains uncertain.
Service: Friendly, helpful staff earn praise across Trip.com and Expedia, though feedback is not uniformly positive.
Amenities: Free Wi-Fi, 24-hour reception, laundry and room service are listed; Expedia says no onsite parking.
Fees and surprises: Cash payment is listed; a cash deposit and extra-person charges may apply.
